Your guide to learning Bahasa Indonesia and culture
My name is Maria Hoga, but most people call me Nonna Hoga. I was born on December 31, 1994, on the beautiful island of Sumba, Indonesia. Since childhood, I dreamed of becoming a teacher and believed that education was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Although I majored in English Literature, my aspirations were tested when the university was declared unaccredited, leaving me without a recognized diploma. For years, I felt my efforts were in vain. Then, at a turning point in 2022, my friend reminded me: “Even without a diploma, you are a true educator with a noble vision.” This motivation reignited my passion. I began teaching children to read and write in English, which led me to teach Indonesian to foreigners who wanted to connect with locals, understand Indonesian culture, and feel at home.
Inspired by my students who were struggling with learning, I wrote my first book:
Aku Pintar Bahasa Indonesia: Indonesian basic for beginner.
This book is very simple, practical, and beginner-friendly. This book reflects my mission to make Indonesian accessible worldwide.
Staying true to my mission, I donate 10% of all sales of my book to help orphans and underprivileged families in Sumba and Indonesia. For me, teaching is more than just a language. It’s about connection, culture, and friendship. My mission continues: sharing Indonesian with foreigners and inspiring others to never give up on their dreams.
